About 10 or so years ago I went to England to visit a childhood
friend. While there I fell in love with the old garden roses
at Sissinghurst. When I came home out came the few token hybrid teas
bought at local nurseries..dug up almost all the grass..got the
combined rose list and was on my way.
I began with shrub roses, which remain the backbone of the
garden...the Bourbons, Hybrid Perpetuals and stripes have
been added. I am not organized enough to have the roses
in groups of classes.. or by color..I don't fancy rose canes
so there's mass underplanting all over.
Roses act as hosts to clematis and peonies...
I'd say that the garden is informal and immature..others call it
imaginative...
